KURUNEGALA Yapahuwa Rock Fortress An
ancient rock fortress and capital built in the 14th century. The
Yapahuwa Rock and its surrounding areas became the capital of the
island for a short time in the 13th century. The rock is 90 meters
in height above the surrounding plain. Many traces of ancient battle
defenses can still be seen. The ornamental stairway remains its
biggest showpiece.
