Aukana Buddha statue is the tallest ancient Buddha statue and situated near Kala Wewa in Dambulla. This is a pure rock statue in” Asisa Mudra” or the posture of blessing. This is a wonderful masterpiece of art because the skillful carvings of the Lord Buddha’s robe and the face’s impassive expression give life to the spiritual supremacy of Lord Buddha.
The alignment of the statue is miraculously organized so that a raindrop on the nose directly falls to the small depression carved between the toes. The neatly carved pleats of the robe show the delicateness that could hardly be molded into a rock. This is believed to be one of the best carvings with the influence of Gandhara School of art and the Amravati school of art in India.
Today, Aukana Buddha statue has become one of the best tourist attractions in Sri Lanka.
